The talk of the town is that there is this new shop for "Foodies". At almost any time this shop is abuzz with activity. In fact there are times when it is so full that people are literally queuing to get in. The name over the door is Deeghuys.
Pass through the door and you can easily be overwhelmed by the activity. Everywhere you find customers fascinatedly bubbling over the unique and original way of presenting food. Here and there you encounter enthusiastic shop assistants rushing from one customer to another giving advice and tips on how to get the best results from the products. In-between all this, more assistants are moving against the traffic, trying to refill shelves, fridges and freezers which are emptied at a continuous rate. Here and there new friends meet, exchanging experiences and giving their own tips. Everybody is having fun.
So what’s it all about? To find out we need to recall a short history.
It all started with a man called Spijker Peters. For years Spijker had been frustrated with what he saw as lost values brought on by the hectic pace of life. Everything in his life was rush, rush, rush. Then one day he got up, decided he’d had enough and at breakfast resolved to his family to change things to how they should be. His habit was bread and cheese for breakfast. "From now we will eat fresh home baked bread" he proclaimed. And so it was.
It soon became clear to Spijker why everyone eats yesterday’s bread at breakfast. Baking takes a lot of time. But Spijker is a man of vision and creativity and set about simplifying the process for his home. So he made a dough as usual, cut and shaped it and then put the pieces in the freezer. That evening before going to bed he took out just enough pieces for the family for breakfast. He put the pieces on a baking pan, covered it with plastic and went to sleep.
While he slept the dough thawed and rose. And when Spijker got up in the morning he saw that the bread was ready for the oven. By the time the family sat down for their meal the bread was baked and a beautiful aroma filled the kitchen.
Spijker was well pleased. Not only was the bread superb but his family applauded him. Spijker announced, "Family, this system can work for all dough products. From now you will have treats in this house like never before."
Now it became so easy to cater with great results that Spijker with new found time on his hands started entertaining his friends with his products. They were astounded by how easy and consistent it all was. "We also want to bake like this," they said. "Will you sell us some goodies from your deeghuys?" they would ask.
Daily Spijker created new food innovations, discovering that a freezer allowed him to interrupt his baking and cooking process. But then at a convenient time he could thaw them and in a short period he could continue the process in any quantity he needed. The food was fresher than fresh and there was never any waste.
The inevitable day came when Spijker could no longer keep everything to himself. He had to share his Deeghuys with his friends and in turn, they with their friends. Fair prices and excellent quality would ensure a growing Deeghuys "family" of food entertainers.
Deeghuys is a refreshing new type of business. Our products are of consistent, delicious and of the highest quality. There are nearly 250 products in our extensive range, giving food lovers varied menu options to suit every occasion.
Deeghuys aims to continue growing the range through ongoing food innovations. They will bind customers through exciting food information forums. The vision is to continue with Spijker’s dream of slowing down and improving the quality of life by maintaining values that matter in families and groups of friends.
While the group originates in Cape Town efforts are urgently being applied to ensure that friends country wide will soon be able to share this wonderful food experience.
